The Roots - How I Got Over
5 stars out of 5
sparse piano-y beats (live as usual) "a bloo bloo" lyricism of the best kind
get
-
Curren$y – Pilot Talk
5 stars out of 5
swag swag swag swag swag swag
probably the best way to describe this, Curren$y is dope, that Wiz Khalifa-brand of southern rapper obsessed with weeeeeeeeeeeeed
weeeeeeeeeed
hedonistic as fuck but also chill as fuck and the production by Ski-Beatz is crazy good
check out "breakfast" for a sample
get
-
Earl Sweatshirt – EARL
get
this
this is an acquired taste
"Earl puts the ass in assassin
and puts the pieces of decomposing bodies in plastic
puts em in a pan and mixes it up with scat
then gobbles it up like fat black bitches and catfish"
yeah
this is all fantasyland violence with the Slim Shady LP as an obvious predecessor and it'd be terrible and stupid if the music wasn't actually so good
fantastic kinda lo-fi beats with crazy synths and shit
and Earl, who is 17 and talks about raping and murdering women but with mad rapping skills
don't call it horrorcore
and fuck steve harvey
FREE EARL
-
Freddie Gibbs – Str8 Killa
classic southern hip-hop subject matter and delivery packaged in the form of a bunch of dope songs
not much to say other than get it son
get
-
Das Racist – Sit Down, Man
um
tongue in cheek stuff
nothing like Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell (which WAS awesome)
approach with a sense of humour
they're actually pretty good rappers, check out "Hahaha JK"
internet as FUCK
get
-
Big Krit – Krit Wuz Here
more southern hip hop
repping Mississippi
a little too long but still good
soulful shit motherfucker
get

Nosaj Thing – Drift Remixed
huge ups to everyone on this album for making such varied tracks. this actually made me finally get a Dorian Concept album. fuck yeah electronic music
bleep bloop
get (thanks, anon)
-
Mass of the Fermenting Dregs – Some Japanese Shit
I have heard this called too many things
I've heard it called shoegaze, post-rock, metal, punk, dreampop, and alternative rock.
there are guitars so it is guitar music.
that's about all I am willing to explain about these guys other than their 09 album was better and they are all japanese
get some
-
Emancipator – Safe In The Steep Cliffs
Abra called this hip-hop earlier
I laughed in her face
down-tempo to the core, Emancipator has a warm homey feeling to him. the majority of his music feels too under-produced to be called instrumental hip-hop, and it's hard to call a guy with this many samples IDM or something like that. He's like 22, and he is a boss. I do recommend this.
get it
-
The National - High Violet
deep voiced Matt Berninger rocks the baritone yet again. Seems like The National can't make a bad record. overall solid, and a worthy addition to their discography.
looowwwww
-
Dessa – A Badly Broken Code
actually found this lady because of an NPR article my mother was listening to
she wanted me to let her listen some more
my mother is a pimp
and Dessa, being female, is insane.
I am joking not all females are insane just most of them
she's a pretty conscious-rap rapper, and what Kiza identifies as "backpacker shit"
friend of P.O.S. (yeah right P.O.S.) and Doomtree member, Dessa seems to craft her lyrics from stone, into which they are set forever. I'm pretty sure she's happy with how she writes, and I'm happy with how it sounds.
everyone is happy but kiza
):
get it

Mount Kimbie - Crooks and Lovers
post-dubstep or something man I am not sure
it's the and dude
no one likes ampersands

I sit myself high upon a mountain top an d I look far, far across the hills
I'm so loaded, man, so deep and full, with all the love and all that is real
We gotta cry out and reach out and turn our twisted minds
And feel the connection that is between you and all that is alive
To be with the smallest and biggest without fear and without pride
I went through the chappel of dangers a few hundred times
And I had to work so hard to keep my love and intuition
And not to loose my guts and not to loose my mind
I reach out, a step foeward, I stumble and I fall
All my greed and longing wasn't for the real at all
SO REACH OUT, REACH OUT get a hand brothers and sisters
Grow on your kindness, love harmony and peace
Empty yourselves of everything, gain in loosing, thriving your freedom
I tried, but I'm sure you will

Check it yo
this isn't in any particular order
Sungrazer – Sungrazer
Dope motherfucking stoner rock. This is really Doug's album but I've listened to it a few times. Riff-based, melodic stoner rock with ridiculous guitar tone just all over your ears. Kyuss influence all over this but it's stoner rock so I guess that's expected. Vocalist is not really Garcia-style stoner rock kinda shit; more "pretty" if you want. Sounds a bit like Lil B
ha ha just kidding
get it or be a lady

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt
DOUGLAS GUEST WRITIN' WHAT WHAT
so I'm not cut out for this writing shit, but Kiza and Kristian (The Tallest Man On Earth) certainly are. The simple visual imagery is just for story-telling. First time I heard this guy, I didn't seem to enjoy anything but his guitar-work (which is fabulous, might I add) until I got more into hip-hop.
That's right. Jay-Z and Nujabes got me into Dylan-vox folk.
The lyrical content is pretty absurd here, so you have to pay attention to get the stories, and recognize when he's just rambling about how much he's walked around and seen everything. After that, and the odd voice, The Tallest Man On Earth is incredibly happy music. Being able to hear the artist smile is one of my favorite qualities in music, and you'll never here this guy sing without emotion.
gettttttt
oh and King of Spain is immaculate
-
The Black Keys – Brothers
The best blues-rock album of 2010 and probably just the best straight up rock album of 2010. The Black Keys, until Attack and Release, were getting stale, what with their 3 or 4 lo-fi blues rock albums. I mean it was good, but that shit was getting MAD OLD
but then Attack and Release came with it's flashes of psychedelia and Danger Mouse production and breathed life into the project. even so, it was lacking a certain something; it just felt uninteresting at some points. Brothers is the intersection of the psychedelic side of the black keys and the blues rock side and it's fucking great, man. Fantastic, mature songwriting mixed with varied instrumentation and just fucking
the fucking BLUES, dude
there's a big soul influence in the record too
it's great you should get it
-
Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Man I really don't want to talk about this album
Y'all know about it already
fucking
Columbians know about this shit
fuck
alright alright
the checklist of awesome things about this album:
fucking massive choirs and shit
crazy clever lyricism
dope ass producers fucking everywhere (Kanye basically invited all the dopest motherfuckers ever to Hawaii and let them be awesome with him)
even with all the producers here Kanye's at least co-producing every song here
Justin Vernon
NO ONE MAN SHOULD HAVE ALL THAT POWER
Raekwon's verse at the end of "Gorgeous"
the fact that All of the Lights features like 10 or twenty different musicians and singers and you can't even tell if any of those motherfuckers are on there at all
Pussies in sarcophagi
Nicki Minaj on Monster
fucking crazy ass instrumentation (strings, pianos, vocoders, guitars, fucking choirs, synths, fucking everything shit man)
the pronunciation of "ridiculous" on So Appalled
the ridikalus beat on So Appalled
the vintage Kanye production on Devil In A New Dress that you only realise is not vintage Kanye production at all but Bink production after reading the liner notes
the chorus of Runaway
the 3-minute vocoder solo in Runaway
falling in love with pornstars
Kanye turning "Woods" into the tribal auto-tune america-choir of Lost in The World
WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA WHO WILL SURVIVE IN AMERICA

Big Boi – Sir Lucious Leftfoot
The second-best hip hop album of 2010. Crazy ass production (Big Boi co-produces on around half of the songs). Big Boi rapping in top form. This shit was delayed WAY TOO FUCKING LONG
fuck Jive Records
no three stacks on here because of Jive Records
fuck them
fuck Steve Harvey too
basically this is just some dope-ass rhymes and dope ass beats
funky motherfucking shit
musically adventurous
crazy ass album
fuck
i mean this is really good guys
get it
big boi was basically like yo fuck all this other shit here's the funkiest shit fucking ever
and then he dropped this
(if you want a preview check out Shutterbugg or Fo Yo Sorrows)
get it fucker
-
James Blake – CMYK
What up it's James Blake
i've already talked about James Blake on here already
but basically:
minimal dubstep (or post-dubstep if you want to just shit all over everything) with chopped up vocal samples (from both 90s and 00s r&b and his own vocals)
piano too
crazy melodic and crazy experimental
his full album is dope as fuck too but it wasn't "released" in 2010 because you're all criminals
CMYK is more dancey (insofar as James Blake can be dancey) and synthy
Klavierwerke is more personal piano works filtered through a scratchy ass laptop mic and
Blake's own minimal arrangements
good shit yo check that shit
got 3 maybe 4 more parts for ya'll now sit down before I kill your whole family
this isn't in any particular order
